On the Floor

Editorial Position

Spec sheets are written by marketing. Reviews are written on the floor.

Every manufacturer has a data sheet. Most will tell you their tolerances hold to ±0.001″. Some of them are right. Chronicle exists for the gap between the spec and the part — the human decisions, the tooling choices, the shift supervisor who actually runs the floor.

We visit facilities. We run sample orders. We talk to the machinists, not just the sales reps. Then we write it down, without a sponsorship relationship in sight.

Hartwell Precision Machining

Cleveland, OH

Tolerances held across the full run. Surface finish on the bores was cleaner than the print asked for.

We ran a 500-piece prototype order for a hydraulic manifold. Hartwell quoted 6 weeks, delivered in 4. The CMM report came with every shipment, unsolicited.

Bend radii consistent. Powder coat adhesion had one lot failure — they caught it before shipment.

Good gate placement, sink marks on wall transitions thicker than 3mm. Ask for flow simulation upfront.

Manufacturer Response
"Chronicle found the issue with our coolant system before our own QC team did. We changed the program."

Porosity on the first tool pull was addressed with venting changes by week two. Cycle time is their real advantage.

"
Manufacturer Response
"The burr critique was fair. We've since added a dedicated deburring station on that line."

Wall thickness variation on deep draws was within 8%. Draft angles on the tool were perfect.

Manufacturer Response
"We disagreed with the sink mark assessment — but we ran the simulation anyway. They were right."

The machinist who reads the print twice

Hartwell Precision Machining · Cleveland, OH

In 14 years covering contract manufacturing, we've toured maybe 80 shops. Hartwell is the first one where the floor supervisor corrected our measurement terminology — politely, accurately, and without being asked.

When DMLS is actually the right answer

Stratum Additive Solutions · Austin, TX

Most additive shops will print anything you hand them. Stratum pushed back on our titanium bracket design — the wall thickness on one feature was going to cause delamination on cool-down. They were right.
